Subject: The Missing Link
Dorothy Page made three singing cowgirl Westerns for Grand National Pictures in late 1938/1939. This one is the missing one. I have the other two on file and have had them in one form or another for over 25 years. This is probably the best of the lot, which isn't saying much, but it gets the job done as far a western goes in a tight 55 minute picture. Why Ms. Page didn't make any more
film appearances is open to conjecture simply because she could sing, ride and act fairly well and a lot of those type films were being made then, and for some time to come.
The story is pretty basic, the songs at a minimum and the comedy,.. well left better alone.
Milton Frome comes off pretty well and against type as the romantic interest and hero such as it is. The inter-play between Dorothy Page and Linn Mayberry viewed through 2012 eyes appears somewhat lesbian, but for 1939, not so much.
Frank Ellis, an old pro, has a nice role as the sheriff for a change. Vince Barnett was a fine comic actor, but not necessarily an action sidekick, but he is a pro and he tries hard here.
All in all, if your a buff/western freak you'll enjoy this. It is a technically well made little picture with a great wmv picture and sound and tight editing and musical score.
